2. This week in celebration of Red Ribbon Week, Mrs. Wittwer planned a "drug free" theme for each day. One of the best things that you as a parent can do is to discuss your expectation that your child will remain drug free and give them ideas for handling peer pressure to make bad choices. The week was culminated with a visit from two UNL athletes, Blake Lawrence and Jessica Yanz who shared the importance for making good choices to work hard in school and refuse to get involved with drugs.

Teachers have appreciated the efforts of parents in helping keep students caught up with work by requesting homework for them.

2. Individual pictures were taken today. We appreciate the parents who helped with school pictures. The picture retake day will be on November 17th. Students who were either absent , did not have their picture money with them at the first picture setting, or who were not satisfied with their original pictures may plan to have their picture retaken at this time.

3. Friday, October 23rd is the day that the class fall parties are scheduled. Students will also celebrate the culmination of Red Ribbon Week at the Student of the Month Celebration at 9:30 a.m. We will also have our annual Big Red Tailgate at lunch. The lunch menu has been changed for Friday to hamburgers and hotdogs rather than grilled cheese and soup.

Connie Hawkins February 14th, Cheryl Rauch, February 15th, and Eileen Schmeichel, February 17th!

This past Thursday Zeman school improvement team met with two persons who visited with us about our school improvement goals and professional learning communities (PLCs). The Zeman staff did a great job sharing about what we have done the past 5 years to address reading and writing achievement at Zeman.
At the end of the three-hour discussion student representatives from third through fifth grade met with the team. These students were a good cross section of Zeman School. Here are some of the comments that they shared:
Our teachers helped us get ready for the state writing test by having us write a lot of rough drafts and final drafts and then tell us what we needed to work on to make our writing better.

My favorite part of the day is math. We are doing fractions and decimals.

We have been working on getting ready for the ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills). It is a new test that we will take in third grade. We are using Test Best to get ready for it.

Every morning when I get to school I think about how I am going to do in reading and writing.

I am glad that we have band because it has helped me do better in my music class because I understand music better now.

Some kids think music is boring but I like it because I want to become a better singer.

I love Mrs. Otte's art class. She has helped me become a better artist.

We learn a lot from Mrs. Wittwer. She teaches us how to get along and stuff like that.

It was encouraging to hear students talk about their perceptions of their school experience. It also emphasized the importance of the variety of experiences that students are given during the school day. The external team will give us a report that includes commendations and recommendations for improving our school improvement process.

Information:
1. Our first real Code Red was called on Monday October 6th. The code red was a result of a call from the LPD informing us that the Tier One Bank had been held up and that the suspects had fled. Because the bank is in proximity of Zeman we were advised of the situation. While our students were not in imminent danger we took the precaution of getting all students inside the building so that we could account for them. After students were accounted for we instructed teachers to make sure that no one left the building and that no one was permitted into the building. There were some parents who came to the building just as we were entering the code red. They were denied access. This was done so that all attention could be given to the task at hand and that was making sure that all students were safe. I really appreciated the understanding of our parents at this time. All decisions during any event like this will be filtered through the lens of "What needs to be done at this time to keep students and staff safe?"

Celebrations! Congratulations to Mr. Bouffard and Mrs Wenstrand and their students on a great instrumental music concert Thursday evening!

Information:
1. Tuesday April 29th is an early release day because of professional learning community time. Teachers will be reviewing assessments and determining progress toward academic goals. Recently during instructional conferences with teachers I realized that teacher PLC teams had organized and planned interventions for any of our students who were below grade level in reading. This is an amazing commitment to the learning of each childÕs reading progress. The interventions are provided by classroom teachers, paraeducators, student teachers or special educators. PLC teams also have worked to plan for students who are achieving above their grade level curriculum by designing learning opportunities with other high achieving students within the grade level. Staff have been good stewards of the PLC early release time.

2. Grade levels have set their fourth quarter goals. Below are the goals that have been set:
Kindergarten: 80% of the students will learn all 36 kindergarten sight words
First Grade: 75% of the first graders will pass the level 7 high frequency word list
Second Grade: 95% of the second grade students will score 80% or higher on the reading theme tests
Third Grade: 80% of the third grade students will pass all five of the timed tests for math
Fourth Grade: Fourth graders will read at least 100 books by the end of the quarter
Fifth Grade: All fifth grade students will score a "3" or "4" on answering questions with a complete sentence and with supporting details.

3. Our fourth quarter celebration will be on May 23rd. The specialists will plan a field day for students during their specials time. Student council will assist with this activity by lining up parent volunteers for the morning and afternoon times.
