Barb DeFreece, May 6th

Celebrations! Congratulations to Mr. Bouffard and Mrs Wenstrand and their students on a great instrumental music concert Thursday evening!

Information:
1. Tuesday April 29th is an early release day because of professional learning community time. Teachers will be reviewing assessments and determining progress toward academic goals. Recently during instructional conferences with teachers I realized that teacher PLC teams had organized and planned interventions for any of our students who were below grade level in reading. This is an amazing commitment to the learning of each childÕs reading progress. The interventions are provided by classroom teachers, paraeducators, student teachers or special educators. PLC teams also have worked to plan for students who are achieving above their grade level curriculum by designing learning opportunities with other high achieving students within the grade level. Staff have been good stewards of the PLC early release time.

2. Grade levels have set their fourth quarter goals. Below are the goals that have been set:
Kindergarten: 80% of the students will learn all 36 kindergarten sight words
First Grade: 75% of the first graders will pass the level 7 high frequency word list
Second Grade: 95% of the second grade students will score 80% or higher on the reading theme tests
Third Grade: 80% of the third grade students will pass all five of the timed tests for math
Fourth Grade: Fourth graders will read at least 100 books by the end of the quarter
Fifth Grade: All fifth grade students will score a "3" or "4" on answering questions with a complete sentence and with supporting details.

3. Our fourth quarter celebration will be on May 23rd. The specialists will plan a field day for students during their specials time. Student council will assist with this activity by lining up parent volunteers for the morning and afternoon times.

4. Note date change: The Zeman fifth grade chorus and fourth grade recorder concert will be on May 5th at 7:00.

5. Please turn in any input regarding classroom placement to the office by May 2nd.

4.Zeman will again host the 2nd and 3rd grade summer school program this
year. The summer school is for students who are in need of additional
time in reading or math to meet the district curriculum objectives. The
dates of the summer school are June 5 through July 2nd. Because the
summer school is only 4 weeks long it is important that students attend
consistently during the session. The hours are 9:15 to 12:15.

5. Students are being given the opportunity to have lunch at the Manners
Table each Monday. Lunchroom supervisors choose 6 to 8 students to eat
in the principal’s office during their lunchtime. They enjoy music,
candlelight (battery operated candles), a tablecloth and decorations.
This is a way to recognize positive behaviors in the lunchroom.
